Hang gliding and para gliding in Rio de Janeiro Brazil

Rio de Janeiro has long been known for beautiful beaches, sexy people, sultry nights, samba, carnival, acai, graviola and exotic food.  Imagine sipping ice cold nectar water from a coconuts while watching all the brazileidas skate, bike, and dance by the infamous Brazilian bikini.  Ah Brasil the only country in the world that has a law specifying the minimum square inch of cloth required to be worn during a samba parade in a costume.  We are talking about 4 square inches to cover a gorgeous feminine figure.  This is Rio de Janeiro where life is fun 24/7 365 days a year.  Not many people know it is also a place to experience excellent hang gliding and para gliding conditions most days of the year.

Para gliding off of Pedra da Gavea

Many people end up visiting the Copacabana Beach while in Rio de Janeiro.  The main avenue in Copacabana is Avenido Nossa de Senhora de Copacabana.  Buses travel up and down this Avenido every 30 minutes Buses are the best way to travel in Rio and very inexpensive about 2-3 reais.  Grab the 177 going to the beach of Sao Conrado.  The bus ride will last about 44 minutes.  The road will be windy and pass some very lovely beach scenery.  The ride is worth taking photos so try to get a seat on the left side of the bus as the best photos will be on the water side.  If you are traveling with a partner carry a beverage with you as the buses are not air conditioned. One can take photos while the other secures the drinks.

Beach of Sao Conrad

Get off the bus at the Beach of Sao Conrado.  Go to the terrace area with concessions.  If you don't see it right away walk toward the beach then follow the music.  You have arrived.  Grab anyone there and inquire about  making a jump off Pedra da  Gavea Mountain.  You will have a choice of para gliding or hang gliding.  I personally like para gliding because it is like sitting in a lounge chair under an umbrella while taking in the beautiful panoramic views.  One tip that I learned is remove your flip flops or sandals before you launch because chances are you will loose them or pull them  apart  when you land on the beach.  If you are with someone not gliding let them carry your flip flops down the mountain or tuck them into the back of your pants.   Be sure to buy the video and photo option from your pilot for about 45  Reais.  You will love sharing the video and photos with all your family and friends. Even if you do not make a flight you will enjoy watching others come in for a landing and then the level of excitement in the atmosphere.  For more options in Rio de Janeiro and other destinations go to www.bobzio.com .
