I am going to pass on the contents of an email sent to me by a friend. I hope it touches your heart like it did mine.
Breakfast at McDonald's: This is a good story and is true. I am a mother of three (ages 14, 12, 3) and have recently completed my college degree. The last class I had to take was Sociology. The teacher was absolutely inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human being had been graced with. Her last project of the term was called, 'Smile.' The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their reactions. I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway. So, I thought this would be a piece of cake, literally. Soon after we were assigned the project, my husband, youngest son, and I went out to McDonald's one crisp March morning. It was just our way of sharing special playtime with our son. We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away, and then even my husband did. I did not move an inch... An overwhelming feeling of panic welled up inside of me as I turned to see why they had moved.
As I turned around I smelled a horrible 'dirty body' smell, and there standing behind me were two poor homeless men. As I looked down at the short gentleman, close to me, he was 'smiling' His beautiful sky blue eyes were full of God's Light as he searched for acceptance....He said, 'Good day' as he counted the few coins he had been clutching. The second man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his friend. I realized the second man was mentally challenged and the blue-eyed gentleman was his salvation. I held my tears as I stood there with them. The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted. He said, 'Coffee is all Miss' because that was all they could afford. (If they wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up, they had to buy something. He just wanted to be warm). Then I really felt it - the compulsion was so great I almost reached out and embraced the little man with the blue eyes. That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my every action. I smiled and asked the young lady behind the counter to give me two more breakfast meals on a separate tray. I then walked around the corner to the table that the men had chosen as a resting spot. I put the tray on the table and laid my hand on the blue-eyed gentleman's cold hand. He looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, 'Thank you’. I leaned over, began to pat his hand and said, 'I did not do this for you. God is here working through me to give you hope.'
I started to cry as I walked away to join my husband and son.... When I sat down my husband smiled at me and said, 'That is why God gave you to me, Honey, to give me hope.' We held hands for a moment and at that time, we knew that only because of the Grace that we had been given were we able to give. We are not church goers, but we are believers. That day showed me the pure Light of God's sweet love.
I returned to college, on the last evening of class, with this story in hand. I turned in 'my project' and the instructor read it. Then she looked up at me and said, 'Can I share this?' I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class. She began to read and that is when I knew that we as human beings and being part of God share this need to heal people and to be healed. In my own way I had touched the people at McDonald's, my son, the instructor, and every soul that shared the classroom on the last night I spent as a college student. I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn: UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE. LOVE PEOPLE AND USE THINGS - NOT LOVE THINGS AND USE PEOPLE.

We are constantly hearing about how expensive healthcare is. I like watching shows like Dr Oz. Each week I get emails from Dr. Hyman about how processed foods are causing an epidemic of diabetes among the younger and older Americans. I like these two Doctors because they give you the facts in a way regular people can understand. What woke me up was something Dr. Hyman said about our food. Most Americans do not get enough minerals and vitamins from the food they eat. Because we do not get enough vitamins and minerals daily our bodies remain hungry and this is why we have a problem with obesity. Well this certainly makes sense and the solution seems very straight forward: get enough vitamins and minerals every day.
I felt like a hound dog hot on a trail. I was going to get my life running smooth and simple. I went out and bought several books written by Dr Hyman. Before he was a Doctor he was trained as a nutritionist. I was in for a wakeup call. Seems like most of the things I thought were right were really wrong. Turns out from the information I was reading that I may have been celiac intolerant or allergic to gluten all my life. Dr. Hyman had a great way to find out if this was the situation. He wrote there were a number of tests that could be performed. These involved taking your blood, laying down lots of cash and then waiting for results. The second option was quick, no needles and free. All I had to do was change my diet for 2 weeks cutting out all the things that had gluten. I can do anything for 2 weeks. Dr. Hyman does a good job in his book of listing the foods to eat and ranks each in groups based on their nutritional value. Then at the end of 2 weeks he suggests adding back different foods one a time over several days. The reason was certain foods may cause an allergic reaction several days after they are consumed.
After my 2 weeks on the clean healthy diet I was feeling good. I was having normal bowel movements daily, sleeping 8 hours a nigth and my body aches had disappeared. Before this I was taking some time to get going in the morning and was experiencing joint pains. I figured this was just part of getting older but was pleasantly surprised with the results 2 weeks later. I have tried adding some of the foods back into my diet and can tell relatively quickly if they are good for me. My nose or my throat are usually first line indicators. My nose will start watering or I find myself clearing my throat. Most of this stuff is genetic and when I think about my relatives I can see the same responses in them. For example my maternal grandmother was constantly clearing her throat and my father always used a handkerchief to blow his nose after a meal. He always carried a handkerchief with him every day.
If you want to see a Dr Oz video or want more information check out www.drhyman.com , we here at www.bobzio.com believe we all have a social responsibility to fulfill. We are doing our part to bring to the front information than can help us all. For more topics like this one go to our website www.bobzio.com .

Most news these days is generally less than positive. I really value good news. Good news gets me motivated and gives me hope that tomorrow is going to be better than today. I want to share some news that you might like to hear also. Most of us have heard about global warming, how much oil comes from the middle east and the big trade deficit we have with the Chinese but have you heard what a small company in Alabama is trying to accomplish?
The company, South Alabama Energy, is pursuing a goal of getting ethanol from pine trees. Sounds a little bit like fantasia until we look back in history. During World War II, Hitler was being squeezed by the Allied forces from the West and Russia from the East. His supply of gasoline was declining. He put his scientist to work to come up with an alternative fuel. What few people are aware of is how Hitler’s decision at this time cost him a victory and saved us all from a surely bleak future. Hitler’s scientist gave him 2 options: they could pursue a new energy source by splitting atoms or build production facilities using a known process to convert trees into ethanol. The first would take all their intellectual resources but had more energy potential while the other did not require allocation of all their intellectual resources to accomplish. Hitler chose not to focus all his German intellectual resources toward developing nuclear capabilities and allocate part to the conversion of wood to ethanol. It is a very good thing for us that he made the choice he did. Nobody wants to think of a scenario in which Hitler had nuclear capabilities. South Alabama Energy is reviving the efforts to convert pine trees into ethanol. Pine trees already give us turpentine a highly flammable liquid full of energy potential. So why not try to get more ethanol from pine trees.
The Germans as far back as the 1890’s were producing 50 gallons of ethanol from 1 ton of wood biomass. South Alabama Energy is expecting to get over 120 gallons from a ton of pine chips. Years ago, many land owners in the Southeastern US started growing pine trees as an agricultural product. Back then the Southeastern States supported several paper mills and lumbering facilities. These days all or most of the paper mills have shut down and the lumbering facilities or working 1-2 days a week because of the housing slump. There are lots of pine trees now that are not being used for anything. The going cost for pine chips is less than $30 a ton. South Alabama Energy aims to produce and sell ethanol for less than a $2.00 a gallon. There other bug news is they plan to put over 5,000 rural Americans back to work harvesting and processing pine trees into ethanol. The forestry department reports suggest that the US tree farms and forest lands can produce enough cellulous wood chips each year on a renewable basis to produce enough ethanol to fuel all the autos in this country if indeed a ton of biomass converts to 250 gallons of ethanol. South Alabama Energy is not giving up any of their secrets yet but they have stated that they intend to use wood chips and algae to get their yields of 250 gallons of ethanol per ton of wood chips. We will keep you posted as this story develops.

Here is the point where www.bobzio.com can help if you are a vacation home owner, home swapper or provide a business service that travelers could use. www.bobzio.com is a no cost option for marketing your property or service. You receive a web page with the option for displaying your video and slide show. There is also a calendar and google mapping function. The value of benefits is substantial when compared with existing internet services. Other comparable services charge up to $1000 per year for all of these benefits. www.bobzio.com is dedicating resources to promotion of individual property and service listings. An owner can also invest dollars in promoting their individual listing and not worry about maintaining their website. www.bobzio.com was created by vacation home owners for other vacation home owners and service providers. We are making a commitment to maintain the no fee structure for the life of the website.
There is one income generating feature in the website called “Rank Purchase”. An owner of a listing can pay extra and have their listing show up on the first pages. This is designed to give those with available capacity the opportunity to get their property or service in front of more travelers for a cost. The cost is determined by the market. The periods are as short as one month.
We here at Bobzio.com are committed to doing the right thing. We want to help those with excess capacity in their vacation rentals, want to organize a home swap and have a business service connect with those in need of a place to stay and needing services in an area of travel. We hope to make a difference and do our part in making for a better future.

I remember working as a consultant in Australia for injured workers. I was responsible for getting those injured the effective care in a timely fashion and verify that they were being compliant with their health care recovery plan. Australia had both public and private health care options but all workers were covered by a workman’s comp program administered by different insurance providers.
One particular client of mine had pain in his knees and had difficulty ambulating for extended distances. He had a job that required him to travel using airports and carry a briefcase with laptop. I arranged for a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon. The appointment was organized within 3 weeks. My client was very keen on getting arthroscopic surgery to repair his knee cartilages. The surgeon examined the knees and reviewed X-rays that were done the previous week. The surgeon advised my client to lose about 25 pounds. My client asked if he could get a stomach staple procedure to assist with losing the weight. The surgeon advised these procedures did not work in the long run and that the only way to lose the weight and keep the weight off was a change in diet. He advised eating as much fruit, vegetables and fish as desired and avoid any processed foods. He talked of avoiding the 3 white foods: white potatoes, white rice, and white sugar. The explanation focused on the fact that these foods convert to glucose quickly in the digestive process and flood the blood system with excessive amounts of glucose. The body responds by releasing high amounts of insulin to process the high levels of glucose. The end result is the glucose is converted to fat at the point it enters the blood stream which is in the midsection. The surgeon summarized the plan for the patient as a change in diet; permit 6 months to lose the 25 pounds and a return visit in 8 months if the pain persisted. He advised using rolling hand luggage where ever possible and sitting during work when possible.
What impressed me about the Australian system was the fact that the surgeon spoke honestly with my client and explained to me afterwards he was paid the same whether he did 10 knee surgeries or 100 knee surgeries and if he was good with his assessments he could help several hundred more patients than if he only focused on performing surgery. We could make some improvements in our health system if we start modeling what works for other countries. The biggest piece of advice that came from the visit was the change in diet. The surgeon did not recommend reducing what was eaten but rather a change in what was eaten and the time period allowed for a gradual reduction in weight. We can all take advantage of this consultation. If you have more stories similar to this one email us at bobzio.com@gmail.com .

Doing the right thing is a total life commitment. One of the principles to be conscious of is the amount of waste we create. A big source of waste is the energy usage of our homes. There are small things that we can do but let’s start with the home itself. The planning process for a home is the most critical phase that determines how efficient your home will be. This is where you can use a professional to help but you can do most of the planning ahead by doing research on the internet.
Let’s take an example of a home designed for conservation of energy resources. This home is a monolithic dome home. It has the following features that makes it energy efficient:
1.Passive temperature reserve. This is because the home is cement with the insulation on the outside. The cement acts as a temperature bank storing the energy. This keeps the inside temperature relatively stable. Think of it like the ocean. The ocean temperature does not fluctuate as much as the air temperature next to it. This is because the water is also acting like a temperature bank.
2.The windows are insulated with a UV reflective coating. Your windows and doors are where most energy is lost. Having double pains and a reflective UV coating helps to minimize this loss.
3.The Copula Design is an energy conserving feature. When the windows are opened in the summer the hot air escapes creating an upward draft drawing air through the home. This technique is used in Middle Eastern desert homes to promote ventilation.
4.You cannot see in by the photo but there is several hundred feet of black industrial strength hose on the roof of the front porch. The water is preheated before entering the hot water heater and is used directly by the washer. This is a very effective solar hot water heater and minimal cost.
5.The coating of the home has a reflective quality to it. It is reflecting the UV rays of the sun. Most roofs that are a dark color will absorb the heat of the sun. This is OK in the winter but not in the summer. Over time in North America you conserve more energy by having a reflective quality versus an absorbing quality to your roof.
This home, because of the design and the above named features requires half the energy of a conventional home. More savings can be gained by choosing an energy efficient heating and air unit along with energy efficient appliances. This home is available for rent on www.Bobzio.com . Contact the owner and arrange a period that you can stay and experience some of the energy saving features. When you plan to build your next home incorporating some of these ideas can save you up to a $100,000 over a 25 year period.
If you have more good ideas to include in our series “Doing the Right Thing” , send us an email at bobzio.com@gmail.com . We hope everyone takes time to think and chooses to do the right thing.

We here at Bobzio.com want to highlight community acts that demonstrate the core values of a Healthy Democratic Republic. This is a true event that occurred on a winter evening on the main highway into Houston Missouri in 1987. I was travelling home from a full day of work and came upon a medium size cargo truck off the side of the road stuck in the ditch. The sun had set and the light of the day was fading. I may have been the second or third truck to stop on the side of the highway
I walked up to the driver standing on the side of the truck and he was explaining to another that his wheel had gotten off the edge of the road and he lost control coming to rest in the ditch. The Truck had tipped so 2 of the wheels were off the ground. The driver was not hurt but was slightly shaken. I recognized the truck after I stopped as belonging to the local feed and seed store owner. The owner was also a local rancher not far outside of town. The driver was delivering supplies to the local feed and seed store. When his front wheel left the pavement the jarring shifted the weight in the cargo area causing the driver to lose control and tip into the ditch. The truck appeared relatively unharmed. A driver in another vehicle parked and reported that a tow truck had been alerted. This was before cell phones. The driver had gone to a neighboring farmhouse to place the call.
In about 30 minutes there were close to 15 trucks parked on the side of the road. This was not a heavily travelled road but all that came upon the situation parked and gathered to see if they could help. Soon I recognized an older gentleman directing traffic telling all that slowed down to continue on as there was enough help already. I was relatively new in the area but I recognized the older gentleman. A local car salesman had sold me a car in December and during the conversation asked my plans for Christmas. I confessed that I had none. He made me promise to come by his father’s residence and have Christmas dinner with his extended family. The man directing traffic was this man’s father. I remember him because I had dinner with him and over 30 of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also had a pet 2000 lb brahma bull that he led around by its’ ear while giving 4 of his great grandchildren rides in the back pasture area. I remember the gentleman being just like the Grandfather figure on the Walton’s a popular TV series of the 80’s.
The tow truck arrived within the hour. He could not move the truck because it had tipped. All of those standing by got on the side of the truck and with a coordinated effort lifted the truck out of the ditch back onto 4 wheels. Then word came back that the truck could not towed because it was fully loaded. There were over 30 trucks by now parked on the side of the road. Everyone got into a line and the items from the truck where passed by each person to the cargo area of each pickup truck. The first 10 pickups were loaded with cargo. Now the cargo truck was hooked up behind the tow truck and was on the road toward the seed and feed store followed by a line of 30 pickups.
The train of trucks pulled into the seed and feed store parking area. The same line of people was recreated and all the pickups were off loaded into the store within 10 minutes. In a little over 90 minutes after the accident the contents of the cargo truck were locked inside the seed and feed Store and the parking lot was empty. In this area there were several norms of behavior. One should always stop to help a stranded motorist. Second was if you were turning left and no one was coming from the opposite direction you get over to the left side when you make a left turn so someone following you does not have to slow down for you. A third was you acknowledge a passing driver with one raised finger or several fingers if they happen to be a neighbor. If they are a friend you stop and have a conversation.
Years later a tennis buddy of mine was telling me when he visited his wife’s family in the Ozark area of Arkansas, his father in law was driving and came upon 2 trucks stopped blocking the highway. His father in law parked the truck and walked up to join the conversation of the drivers. He returned several minutes later. My friend's father in law later reported one of the drivers was Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart. They were sharing recent hunting experiences.

There comes a time when good people need to stand up and do the right thing. That time is now. Bobzio.com is standing up and doing what we can to support the values of democracy and civilized society. We aim to give recognition to those citizens and organizations supporting democratic principles, demonstrating social responsibility and fiscal integrity. Bobzio.com is a website promoting vacation rental properties, socially responsible businesses, and providing a forum for blogs of interest to responsible citizens.
How do we aim to be a socially responsible citizen? We offer a free platform for homeowners to advertise their homes for additional income. We encourage people to do the responsible thing during this economic crisis by making their payments even if their home value dips below the loan value. We give socially responsible businesses and service providers a free platform to advertise their products and services. We offer an article publication service with the goal of giving recognition and praise to those individuals and businesses doing the right thing pursuing a socially beneficial purpose.
We encourage other citizens to follow our lead and stand for a strong republic based on cooperation, integrity and concern for all those who may be experiencing less than ideal economic circumstances. We are at the cusped of economic disintegration with all that has happened in recent years and economic challenges that lie ahead. If we all join hands and face future economic challenges united we can return to stability. We need to avoid at all cost an increase in global economic disintegration. Let's not forget the lessons of history that gave opportunity to the evil named Adolf Hitler of Nazi Germany, Benito Mussolini of Italy, and Emperor Hirohito (alongside his Prime Ministers, Hideki Tōjō and Fumimaro Konoe) of Japan. Let's follow the role models of the heroes from those turbulent years. For those who do not know what I refer to, view the movie Defiance staring Daniel Craig. Craig plays the role of a true hero, Tuvia Bielski who saved over 1200 Jews. The following deteriorating economic conditions created the situation that gave rise to World War II and the miraculous true story of Tuvia Bielski.
Germany experienced hyperinflation, collapsing tax revenues, and unemployment increases from 2-23% in 1923. A new chancellor, Gustav Streseman was appointed during this critical economic period. His new party, German People's Party (DPV) formed a coalition with the Social Democrats (SPD), a moderate socialist party strongly anti-communist and the largest of the parties committed to the Republic. Gustav Streseman united the center against the extreme Right (Nazi) and Left (Communist). He introduced a new stable currency resolving hyperinflation, ended financial support of a general strike putting people back to work, crushed a communist revolt in Saxony and turned back an insurgence by Hitler in Bavaria. He succeeded in renegotiating a 2 year moratorium on payments and more favorable short term reparation repayment terms stipulated by the Treaty of Versailles. He peacefully negotiated return of German homelands under military supervision. $800,000,000 in loans mostly from America poured into Germany. Road construction projects and state governments were funded by these loans. Germany became fertile grounds for the arts, architecture, and sciences. German was the international language of chemistry and physics. Albert Einstein lived and taught in Berlin. The German economy was funded by loans from America. Then the financial collapse of 1928-1929 occurred. 10 billion dollars was wiped off investment ledgers and short term loans made to Germany were called in. Firms cut back. Production levels fell. Several banks in Austria and Germany failed. Unemployment rates rose to 33%. Governments could not pay the unemployment benefits. The Chancellor, Gustav Streseman died and was replaced by Heinrich Bruning. The new Chancellor followed a policy of economic austerity where government spending was cut in order to keep inflation under control to keep German exports competitive. He increased taxes, reduced salaries and reduced unemployment assistance. His policies worsened the situation. A general bank failure followed the democratic leadership became unstable and opened the door for Hitler and his Nazi party to gain power in 1932.
Do some of these events: bank failures, austerity policies, cut government spending, increased taxes, increasing unemployment, inability of governments to pay benefits from that period mirror today's headlines? I can make a correlation to the economic stress on the middle class then and what is going on now. Let's unite in a grassroots effort to address our economic fragility by standing up for what is right. Follow our www. Bobzio.com Press Releases and support our effort to strengthen our democratic republic.

The population of Itacare in 2006 was over 12,484 not counting tourist. The city has grown by an estimated 10-15%. I visited during the November period and felt very relaxed. There were not crowds or the hussle bussle of other typical tourist destinations. The restaurants all have someone in front who will show you their menu with prices and will give you a sales pitch on why their particular restaurant is better than the others. I did not meet many persons doing this who spoke English so it is best to familiarize yourself with some basic Portuguese to read the menus. Even if you do not know how to read in Portuguese you can still point out your selections. Most everything served up will be very tasty and palatable for the American, European and Australian palate. I recommend trying all the different Sucos (fruit juices) during your visit. There are about 20 to sample from. You will become a connoisseur of the Brasilian Fruit Juices and local cuisine. My favorite Sucos are Acai, Graviola, and Caja. There is also Caju which is from the fruit that produces the Caju nut. So you will need to differentiate between these 2 options when ordering. One I like the other I do not.
I dined in several of the restaurants and had pleasant experiences in all. There are different levels of atmosphere. One with a particularly nice atmosphere was on the main drag for restaurants and shops. They played beach, reggae and Brasilian music with a very decorative interior. They prepared food over a wood burning stove which gave the food a very good woody taste much like something hickory smoked. The food was priced between $R40 - $R65 for 2 persons and included fish (red snapper when we visited), prawns, lobster, chicken, pork and beef. This was served up in a typical Brasilian stew called Moqueca. You will not find a McDonalds or Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise here. We did see a Subway which I thought was interesting. There were not any Starbucks or Coffee houses there. The area is dominated by the culture of Brasil with very little outside influences.
My overall recommendation is Itacare is well worth the trouble in visiting. It reminded me of a Santa Cruz California in the 50’s when only surfers frequented the town or Hawaii before the presence of the High Rise Hotels and the tourist industry. You will need to brush up on your Portuguese because English is not normally used by the local establishments. I rate my experience in Itacare a 4.2 on a 5.0 scale for culture, quality of food, and natural beauty of the surroundings.
