WHAT is the game of lawn bowling? Lawn bowling is a game between two individuals or between two teams. The object of the game is to roll grapefruit-sized bowls (ball-like objects) weighing about 3.5 lbs toward a small white ball called a "jack" located at the other end of the green, about 100 feet away. The fun part is that a bias is built into the bowl so that it arches 3-6 feet at the end of its roll. The person who has rolled their bowl closest to the jack scores a point. Games last about 1.5 hours |

Our club, Holmby Park Lawn Bowling Club (HPLBC), is situated in one of the most beautiful parks in Los Angeles, right next to the Los Angeles Country Club at 646 Comstock Avenue. Please click on the "Map" to find more detailed information about our location.
We are a diverse club, open to all who can pass our rather simple test of lawn bowling. Our 150 members come from 19 different countries and reside in a 20-mile wide circle in our area. Our youngest members are in their early thirties, and one of the oldest is over ninety. We believe that regular lawn bowling in the fresh air in this gorgeous park keeps all our members happier and perhaps younger.
Many generations of our members have been fortunate enough to bowl in this park continuously since 1927. In September 2002, HPLBC celebrated its 75th Diamond Jubilee when the Cit... |

Many generations of our members have been fortunate enough to bowl in this park continuously since 1927. In September 2002, HPLBC celebrated its 75th Diamond Jubilee when the City of Los Angeles rededicated our facilities.
Many of our members learned this game at the time of their lives when they were hesitant to learn a new sport and to meet new friends. To those who were skeptical about their ability to bowl we said: "To throw up your hands and conclude it's too late to experiment, will prevent boredom from destroying the fun and excitement in your life! So come and give lawn bowling a chance at Holmby Park!"
We have two 'greens' (playing fields) that can accommodate a maximum of 96 bowlers playing Triples (three member teams) at the same time.
You are invited to learn how to bowl (we provide FREE LESSONS with free use of our equipment) at our club during the days and time indicated below. |

Our immaculate and cozy green and clubhouse is maintained via a joint relationship with the City of Palo Alto Parks and Recreation Department along with a wonderful cadre of volunteer members. Please see the calendar section for all the schedules, tournaments and, of course, the social functions. What other sport offers people of all ages so many pizza, chicken, chili, etc., picnics in the park or dinners in the clubhouse? |

Membership in the Jefferson Park Lawn Bowling Club is open to anyone with an interest in lawn bowling. We welcome all skill levels, from "never bowled before" to national competitors. Lawn bowling membership fees are per person. We aim to keep fees as low as possible and still be able to maintain the bowling greens and facility.
